Steve Szabo; Fine Art Photographer

Szabo moved into a 19th-century farmhouse in a remote area of Somerset County, Maryland. Here he proceeded with his large format camera to record the tranquil, haunting scenes of America, which had played a seductive role in his escape to the region. Woods and marshes, the play of light on water, graying and decaying houses with their silver patina, the rusting hulks of abandoned boats like beached baby whales, all devoid of life, including the birds which have lost theirs, evoke stories long forgotten.

The formal structure and beauty of the photographs show reality. They portray an elegant sense of design, a mastery of light and space.

The lighting used in Steve Szabo’s photo’s is dark and dull, however they highlight the key areas of the photo. The camera angle used in the photo above is straight with surrounding backlight to show it at an angle, showing different angles of the key part of the photo. Lighting is used to brighten and darken different areas giving it the effect of dullness with a tint of light into the photo.

A lot of Szabo’s photo’s relate to dark thoughts, which is why they are transformed into black and white, with the saturation and contrast adjusted to give off more of a dull effect.
